Proper Public Transport

Luke at Sutton Station

Sutton has been cut off for far too long.

Sutton's transport links to central London (or the lack of them) have been the subject of a saga that has stretched on for over a century. Now, in the second half of the 2020s, it is unacceptable that our area remains so badly separated from our major city.

It's not just about the services that we don't have - it's also about the quality of the services that we do have. Trains run on reduced timetables (if they run at all) and buses are too often delayed. The current situation just doesn't work for hardworking local commuters.

I'm campaigning to change that - we must improve services from all stations in Sutton and Cheam so that residents can rely on public transport, and not be at the mercy of last minute cancellations or overcrowded services.

Sutton's brighter future is one where public transport is a real, cheap, effective option for everyone.

Save our Buses

PETITION: Save our Bus Routes!

SIGN THE PETITION TODAY

On the 22nd of January 2026 Go-Ahead Buses confirmed they would be stepping away from providing services across South London that so many people rely on because the Government's foolish Jobs Tax had made it unaffordable.

My Lib Dem colleagues and I are calling on the Mayor of London to step in and guarantee the future of these routes.

This is incredibly important - so many people will be impacted if these bus routes are scrapped. Labour made this mess, so they must fix it.

Truly hellish service - Worcester Park Station

The situation at Worcester Park station is disgraceful. I have heard from countless constituents about the ongoing reduced service, which has remained at pre-pandemic levels despite the increased demand. The significant cuts to late-night services are particularly concerning, forcing people who are enjoying themselves in central London to resort to costly taxi journeys.

Frequent delays and cancellations at all times of the day are making commuting increasingly impossible.

I've been campaigning on this for a long time - and am glad to see that following a recent meeting with South Western Railways, they are now finally preparing a consultation for next year on what a new and improved timetable would look like. When that is launched formally, I'll be sharing it with you so that you can have your say. In the meantime - they have set up a dedicated mailbox (futuretimetables@swrailway.com) for comments, views and suggestions.

The linchpin of local trains - Sutton Station

We had a win on improving local public transport links in November 2025 - with Govia Thameslink confirming that a new service will be available to commuters from Sutton station from Monday 15th December.

The train company has announced that the existing 08:27 Selhurst to London Bridge via Tulse Hill service will now start at 08:00 at Sutton on weekdays, and will also call at Wallington (08:07) and West Croydon (08:18).

This is a rare bit of good news for commuters in our corner of London, and comes after repeated calls by myself for residents to see the benefits of rail nationalisation on their daily commute. The train isn’t a quick train, but it should offer residents who want to get to Wallington and West Croydon another option to travel, and reduce congestion on other services.

Barely a week goes by when I don’t hear from local commuters that they are fed up with overcrowded trains and a limited timetable, so this new extra service from Sutton station in the morning peak will add incredibly welcome additional seats, and the new timing will be helpful for so many people trying to get into London.

I’ll keep pushing for more trains and better service across Sutton.

Local Buses
S4 Bus petition

Buses are a lifeline for local people.

Far too often, local people are being let down by unreliable bus services.

As well as issues with the 154, I have heard repeated complaints about the 463 and S4 bus.

This just isn't good enough - so across Sutton, the Liberal Democrats are calling on Transport for London to conduct a review of all local bus routes performance.

The situation with the S4 bus is particularly unacceptable - TfL has recently announced plans to cut its frequency from three buses an hour down to just two.

This will massively impact residents who rely on the service every day to reach essential services such as schools, GP surgeries, the Royal Marsden Hospital, and our local high streets.

We’ve written an open letter to TfL demanding that they reconsider this decision and reverse the cuts to the S4 - you can add your name here.

I also want to see the S2 bus service extended all the way to Epsom Hospital, so that residents attending appointments don’t have to wait to get a separate bus from Epsom town centre to the Hospital. I'm pushing TfL to explore this option as soon as possible.

Standing up to the Mayor

A217 Bus Lane

In 2024 Sadiq Khan proposed to install a new bus lane on the southbound side of the A217 Oldfields Road between Sutton Common Road and Kimpton way. It was part of his 25X25 bus programme, which seeks to install 25km worth of new bus lanes by March 2025.

In this case - it meant installing a short bus lane that served very few buses, was unlikely to improve bus journey times and made the rest of the road one lane only for non-bus traffic 24 hours a day. It would have meant traffic chaos and had a negative effect on businesses in the Kimpton Estate.

In his typical fashion, the Mayor was pushing for something simply to meet a self-imposed target with no real consideration of the impact it would have on the community. So, along with my Lib Dem colleagues on the council, I fought back and held constructive meetings with TfL officers who understood the problems we raised.

Then, in December 2024, they announced they had listened to our concerns and were scrapping it.

I hope TfL will now consider proper options for our borough - including extending the London Overground, linking us to the Tram network and increasing peak hour capacity so that residents can rely that buses will even turn up, and be able to get a seat, rather than be told that the bus isn’t picking up.

TfL Fares

In December 2025 we found out that while national rail fares were to be frozen, Tube fares would rise by an astonishing 5.8%. It is clear that not only has Sadiq Khan failed to make this case to his ‘mates’ in Government for proper investment for London, he’s now expecting ordinary working people to stump up the costs instead.

London Labour may be in for a rude awakening in the May 2026 London Elections.

Ending endless roadworks

Our Lib Dem-run Council are taking action to bring about an end to roadworks that stretch on for much longer than is necessary. We are taking advantage of new powers to charge those carrying out works a daily fee for occupying the highway within the busiest times on the busiest streets.

We all know the frustration of sitting in traffic at temporary lights whilst the roadworks site remains empty in the middle of the day. But these works also limit the Council’s ability to co-ordinate traffic across the borough.

By charging a fee of up to £2,500 per day, we’ll be incentivising builders to speed up, work more efficiently, and reduce the number of wasted hours.

We have joined with other London Boroughs to fight for the right to use these new powers, and if approved the scheme could begin in spring next year.
